Housing is one of the significant expenses that seniors face, often taking up around 35% of the household budget. Even seniors that own their own houses free and clear can struggle, due to costs like home maintenance.
Those who wish to stay in their own homes may face additional expenses too, such as house modifications/additions to decrease fall risk.
Affordable housing is critical for helping seniors to save money, to stay healthy and to live well. But, the field is complicated and confusing.
There are many different programs out there, with their own requirements – not to mention state-to-state variations.
There’s far too much information to cover in a single post (or even a series!), so we developed a comprehensive eBook instead. The eBook was released in 2016, but we’ve rewritten and updated it to make it relevant to 2020.

Thanks for explaining how important it is for elderly people to have assistance when living on their own because of how expensive it can be. I hope that my grandparents can get some in-home help soon. That way they can save money and be in a good position physically and financially.

My dad has been having a hard time taking care of himself, so we’re trying to find ways to help him out. It makes sense that we would want to find affordable housing for him. It’s good to know that doing that can help lower his risk of falling.

Affordability isn’t the only thing to consider with housing. It’s important to find a suitable environment too. It can take time to get something that is right, but a good place can make a huge difference.
