The Best Wireless Meat Thermometer for Home Grills

February 8, 2024 By David Venson Leave a Comment

Temperature Reading on the ThermoPro, the best wireless meat thermometer I've found

Any seasoned griller can tell you that the secret to perfecting juicy meat is getting your temperature right. You can’t leave this to chance.

Like many of you, I was looking for something reliable and accurate that would give me the freedom to walk away from the grill for a few moments to prep without fearing the temperature would spike. It turns out that finding the best wireless meat thermometer is surprisingly difficult. But, not impossible.

Over the years, I’ve tested my fair share of thermometers. I had another cheap, no-name brand that didn’t last long. It often left me with overcooked meat. In this article, I discuss my favorite wireless meat thermometer, ThermoPro.

I have used the ThermoPro handheld to compare temperatures and found that my old cheap thermometer was sometimes up to 50 degrees off. No wonder the meat burned!

The Product in Question

The ThermoPro with Leads

So, the wireless meat thermometer I’m excited about is called the ThermoPro Wireless Meat Thermometer (you can find it on Amazon here). It’s a wireless device with two probes that can sync to an app via Bluetooth. It’s also well-reviewed, especially on Amazon, with many people loving its performance.

There’s actually a four-probe option as well, although my experience is with the two-probe model.

The thermometer uses Bluetooth 5.0 technology with an impressive 650 feet range. The probes can monitor internal or ambient temperatures of up to 572°F. They’re also highly accurate, with an accuracy of ±1.8°F.

The thermometer transmitter has an LCD backlit display. Amazingly, it can hold charge for up to eight months, making it an incredibly convenient tool.

How I Use The ThermoPro

I will use both probes when I’m cooking long smokes, like brisket ribs and pulled pork, which takes multiple hours. Doing so is fantastic because you can’t always rely on the grill’s temperature gauge on the grill. Yet, it’s good to have a temperature read at the grill level.

The two probes allow users to simultaneously monitor the temperature of different meats or sections of the grill. You get even more flexibility with the four-probe version.

Two probes mean you can use one for the grate temperature and the other for the meat. Another bonus is that you can plug it up to USB-C for recharging.

The ThermoPro for Searing Meat

This thermometer may only be a bit less reliable when you’re searing meat. You’re dealing with high temperatures when searing meat, so that it will fluctuate more with high temperatures. Besides, when searing meat, you must be attentive and close by.

Still, other wireless meat thermometers struggle with temperatures for searing meat as well – the issue isn’t limited to the ThermoPro at all.

Loud Alarms

The alarms on the ThermoPro App are very loud, but for good reason – you won’t miss it once it hits the target range. You can always program your target range; there are ten preset target ranges to program different meat selections.

The loud alarms may be a bit much for some. But, honestly, it’s better to have them too loud than not loud enough.

Bluetooth Capability

Be sure to extend the antenna on the back of the unit to improve the Bluetooth range, allowing you to monitor temperatures as far as possible.

While the device is advertised as having a Bluetooth range of around 650 ft, some reviews find this isn’t the case at all. This is disappointing, but then again, this is Bluetooth. If you’re looking for a larger range, you’ll need a device the connects to Wi-Fi instead (which will come with a higher price tag).

The tab on the back is important here. It extends the Bluetooth range and isn’t immediately obvious. Some users may have never noticed it at all.

I’ve never had any problems personally and find the ThermoPro to be reliable and easy to use.

Why This ThermoPro is the Best Wireless Meat Thermometer

The initial ThermoPro reading

Easy and Versatile

The thermometer’s versatility is its best selling point. You can use it for smoking beef roast, grilling, and cooking various meats. It is handy for simultaneously monitoring different parts of a whole chicken or multiple chunks of beef.

The thermometer is relatively easy to use, with a straightforward setup process. The app’s user interface is intuitive, and the thermometer is easy to read and operate. It has helpful features like temperature tracking and alarms.

I’ve tested the accuracy of the meat by having multiple thermometers connected. As noted, previous ones were as far off as 30 to 50 degrees. Not this one. It was spot on. A reliable temperature reading is essential to avoid overcooking or undercooking their meats.

You can also take advantage of the wireless functionality to monitor temperatures from various locations and multitask.

Customizable Alarms and Connectivity

The thermometer’s customizable temperature alarms and notifications received positive feedback. Users can set alarms for specific temperatures, which helps in achieving desired doneness levels.

The Bluetooth functionality allows users to monitor the temperature of their meat remotely using the ThermoPro app. This is especially useful for grilling or smoking when you don’t want to constantly check the grill.

The thermometer relies on Bluetooth for connectivity, limiting its use to the immediate vicinity of the house. It does not have Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring. There may be some limitations in the Bluetooth range, especially when there are walls or obstacles between the thermometer and the smartphone.

Although the probes are about 6 inches long, it’s really only that ½ inch that is measuring temperature. If working with smaller cuts of meat like ribs or chicken wings, use the brackets to brace the probes on your grill grate.

You can customize temperature alarms based on preferences for rare, medium-rare, or well-done meat, ensuring their dishes are cooked to perfection.

The ThermoPro app allows users to multitask in the kitchen or while hosting guests, as they can monitor the temperature remotely and receive notifications when their meat reaches the desired temperature.

I find the app incredibly helpful myself. Who wants to stand and monitor meat on the grill when there’s so much else that needs doing?

Durability and Battery Life

The thermometer is durable and the battery life has been phenomenal and is suitable for long cooking sessions. Reviewers on Amazon have had similar positive experiences to me, praising the long battery life of this thermometer. This feature ensures the thermometer can be used for multiple cooking sessions before needing a recharge.

Users also have mentioned that the probes and overall build quality of the thermometer are robust and sturdy.

The manufacturer offers replacements when needed. As such, any issues should be quickly remedied.

Roasting and Smoking

Use the thermometer for roasting cuts of meat, such as beef roast, and for smoking meats, where precise temperature control is essential.

Monitor the temperature inside your grills to ensure consistent heat during smoking or grilling sessions.

Track a range of internal temperatures of meats, such as turkey, brisket, or ribs, to achieve the desired level of doneness.

You can also experiment with different cuts of meat. Some users have used the multiple probes to cook different types of meat simultaneously, making their cooking sessions more versatile and efficient.

The temperature probe can be used for any type of meat, even meatloaf or very small pieces of chicken. The meat just needs to be able to hold an inch of the thermometer. As a result, the thermometer might even be a tool in helping you to prepare soft meat for seniors.

The Verdict

The ThermoPro Digital Meat Thermometer is a versatile, accurate, and easy-to-use tool that enhances the cooking experience for both novice and experienced cooks. It’s easily the best wireless meat thermometer I’ve found and one I’ll keep using for a long time.

Final Thoughts

We live in Arizona, where the heat is brutal. Babysitting a grill in over 100-degree weather is not only uncomfortable but even a health risk, especially for prolonged hours. The ability to monitor the grill from cooler quarters is terrific.

Those of you living in freezing weather can benefit from the same, particularly for winter outdoor grilling. You can stay indoors!

The meat thermometer is also helpful for seniors who can’t stand for long periods at a time. Using the app gives you the chance to rest, without needing to keep checking the grill.
