A collaboration of bible verses for caregivers between Kapok Aging & Caregiver Resources and Each Day Anew.
A common question we hear from readers is whether or not it is their obligation and duty to care for an aging parent as they need more assistance with day-to-day tasks. We delve into other aspects of this choice in other articles, such as the caregivers’ bandwidth, distance, and relationship to the parent. Our religiously inclined readers, however, may want to know how their faith factors into their role, which is why today we’re talking about Bible verses for caregivers.
Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about your role in caregiving? We collected the most pertinent verses that speak to our relationship to our parents, and the virtues of patience and self-sacrifice that we’ve come to know from caregivers.
Feel free to use them at your caregiver support groups or discuss them at your next Bible study.

Honoring Our Parents
Despite the inconveniences and disruption to their own lives, caregivers often point to their sense of duty to caring for aging parents as a way of honoring them.
Leviticus 19:32. Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honor the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.
Proverbs 17:6. Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
Proverbs 23:22. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Ephesians 6:1-4. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Helping and Advocating for the Sick and Weak
There’s a reason that caregivers are often said to be doing God’s work.

For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Matthew 20:25-28. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
