Whether you’re a part-time caregiver, a full-time one, or just providing regular support to a senior, you’ve probably wondered – how do I make money?
After all, life isn’t cheap. It’s often hard to make ends meet as-is. Adding an aging parent into the mix makes things even more challenging.
Even if they can pay their way, there may be some unexpected expenses, ones you need to cover. Many caregivers also struggle to keep traditional jobs. It’s hard, isn’t it? How do you keep a normal job going when you get called away regularly, when you’re highly stressed, or when you’re not sleeping at night?
Getting Paid as a Caregiver
One answer is to get paid to care for your family member. Doing so really is possible in many states.
The senior has to meet some strict criteria though, which includes having significant health needs and a low enough income. Most of the time, they’ll need to be eligible for Medicaid too.
Sometimes seniors will have enough money to pay you for caregiving directly. If this is the case, you’ll need to get everything down in writing. Having a formal agreement between you and your loved one might feel strange, but this is an essential way to protect yourself and them.
But, we must ask – is this a good way to make money as a caregiver?
Doing so embeds you into the caregiving role and all the stresses that come with it. You may even be required to do more tasks than you were doing before.
Plus, if your family member can pay for a caregiver (through a program or out of their own pocket), they can pay for someone else. Doing so may be much better – freeing you up to help with extra tasks and to earn money other ways.
Other Ways to Make Money as a Caregiver
How else do you earn then?
You could focus on a traditional job, particularly if you have a flexible employer, only work part-time, or can work from home.
The right job and the right employer can work well.
Often though, you’ll need to get more creative.
Don’t worry. There’s an insane number of options out there. Some involve working for other people, like driving for Uber, while others involve striking out on your own. You could even develop a small service that delivers groceries to homebound seniors or provide fully cooked meals.
