So, we’re coming up to Mother’s Day again. It’s a special time of the year and a chance to show your mother how much she means to you.
But… it’s tricky too.
After all, if your mom is now a senior, you’ve probably had 60 or more years of mother’s days, not to mention Christmases and birthdays. That’s a lot of gift giving occasions.
So, how do you find exciting Mother’s Day gifts for aging moms? You know what I mean, right? Gifts she’s actually going to want. Ones that she’d never think of buying for herself.
Then, let’s take a look. In this post we’re digging into the different gifts that aging mothers are certain to love. Of course, the gifts aren’t limited to Mother’s Day. You could easily use them for different situations as well.
Subscriptions as Mother’s Day Gifts
We’re big fans of subscriptions at Kapok. That’s partly why we’ve partnered with CrateJoy to bring you some of the most amazing – and unique – subscription boxes.
Subscriptions are fantastic, as your mom gets new treats every month (or occasionally every quarter), for the length of their subscription. This is a regular reminder of how much you love them. The boxes aren’t always the same either. Instead, companies often have different themes each month, which keep the boxes fresh and exciting.
There are all kinds of subscriptions to choose from too, including some that are familiar and others that are completely unexpected.
The Believer’s Bag
This subscription is designed for Christian women. It features a variety of products, including scripture cards, prints, and jewelry. The company also donates a meal to the company Food for the Poor with each purchase.
The box isn’t age-specific at all, so you might even get one for yourself as well.
Bath Bevy
There are many bath and shower boxes out there. Bath Bevy is a particularly good one, shipping out bath bombs, bath salts, soap shrubs, and plenty of other items. You get five to seven items in every box. The products are all handcrafted by companies in the United States.
The company even has a tubless option, so people without baths can still get a wonderful gift.
Shaker & Spoon Cocktail Club
There is a surprising number of cocktail clubs out there, but Shaker & Spoon is easily one of the best. Each box contains the ingredients to make 12 drinks – from three different recipes.
There’s no alcohol in the boxes, but everything else is included. Skipping the alcohol is helpful anyway, as it means the boxes can ship to any state. Besides, if your mom loves cocktails, she probably already has the alcohol she needs on hand.
Does a cocktail kit for a senior sound strange?
It shouldn’t, as many seniors still enjoy drinking regularly. Cocktails are also a great way to fully enjoy the flavor and nuance of alcohol – and to share the experience with friends.
Monthly Mocktail Box
For moms who don’t drink alcohol, there’s this monthly mocktail kit. We’re not just talking about any old mocktails, though. Instead, this kit gives her the ingredients to create nuanced and interesting mocktails. Some may even taste better than their alcoholic counterparts.
Each box contains between four and eight products with enough ingredients to make four servings of the featured drink each month. However, you’ll often be able to make six or even eight servings instead.
The Personalized Tea Subscription
For seniors who love tea, how about a tea subscription? There’s a surprising number of these to choose from, but this is a particularly good one.
Each month contains four different types of tea, with enough to make roughly 100 cups of tea. The four featured teas aren’t random either. Instead, they’re based on the drinker’s preferences and tea ratings.
If you don’t know which teas your mother likes, no worries, you can opt for a selection of popular teas instead.
An Amazing Clubs Subscription
Amazing Clubs is a seriously impressive site. They now offer 44 different clubs, in every style you can imagine. Some of their most interesting entries include:
- Bacon club
- Breakfast club
- Chocolate club
- Dinner club
- Ice cream club
- Pasta club
- Pie club
- Wine club
There’s also a variety club that allows you to combine multiple clubs into a single subscription. So, your mom might get cupcakes one month, pasta a second, and ice cream a third.
Mother’s Day gifts for aging moms don’t get better than that.
Hopebox
This subscription follows the idea of self care and hope. It offers a selection of different items around this theme, including snacks, mints, body scrubs, aromatherapy items, candles, and more.
There are ten or more gifts in each box. The boxes are also seasonal and all the items within them focus on that season’s theme. This means the subscriptions are more than just a random collection of items.
There are a few other cool things too. First – this box is incredibly well-reviewed and is very popular. This means that most recipients are happy with all they get. Also, the style doesn’t scream ‘old lady’, which really is important.
The gifts themselves are excellent too. They’re certain to be well-received.
Box of Blessings
This subscription is perfect for moms who are concerned about poverty and families that struggle. Each month sends out a small box containing three to four handmade items.
Jewelry often features in the boxes, but there are other items too, including trinkets, small books, bags, and more.
Celebrate States
We’ve featured this box on a few gift lists now, as it really is fantastic.
Basically, the subscription sends out a large selection of products from small businesses, including items like coasters, lotions, treats, and plenty of others.
Each month features a different state and even includes some educational items. It really can feel like a mini vacation. This could be the perfect gift for an aging mother who can no longer travel.
Also… this kit is a nice break away from the endless selection of pampering, bodycare, bath, book, and candle boxes. Those are all nice enough, but they get a bit tedious after a while.
Fruit For Thought
Speaking of unusual boxes, I really love this one. It’s called Fruit for Thought, as the items all follow a fruit theme.
The product selection and style varies quite dramatically from one month to another. This isn’t a bad thing though. After all, subscription boxes can get pretty boring when they’re too repetitive.
Another Subscription Box
We’ve featured plenty of different subscription boxes, but we’re still just scratching the surface. Cratejoy has a huge selection of other boxes – in every theme you can possibly imagine.
Seriously, there are boxes for most hobbies, not to mention escape room games, plants, products for the home, personal growth, spa kits, and tons of books. Why not have a look? You might find something perfect without much work at all.
Other Mother’s Day Gifts for Aging Moms
So, clearly there’s no shortage of subscriptions. But, what if you want something different?
There are plenty of classic options out there, including bath products, lotions, flowers, chocolates, and the like. Those are a bit boring though.
What else?
Here are some unusual and interesting gifts to consider.
A Smart Watch
It’s easy to assume that seniors don’t know much about technology.
Some seniors do struggle, that’s true. Plenty of others do well with tech, especially when taught how to use it.
Smart watches can be a fantastic choice, as the senior will already be familiar with using a watch. Many smartwatches are surprisingly straightforward anyway, with relatively few features. Such watches wouldn’t take long to get used to, even for seniors who have never owned a smartwatch before.
You could go a step further and look for a fall detection watch. The fall detection feature can help keep your mother safe. Such watches also function as medical alert devices, which makes them even more powerful.
A Tablet
While we’re talking about technology, what about a tablet?
Tablets have many benefits for seniors, as they can be used for video calling, provide hours upon hours of entertainment, and even take photographs.
While a tablet might seem overwhelming to seniors at first, teaching them step-by-step can make the world of difference. Many seniors pick up the steps surprisingly fast and seem like old hands before long.
Video Calling Devices
If a tablet is too much, you can try a specialized video calling device. Many of these devices are designed to be simple. Some can even be used by dementia patients, as they have an auto answer feature.
The devices vary considerably in their strengths, weaknesses, and features, so it’s best to do a little research and work out the best device for your mother’s needs.
A Recipe Book
It’s hard to go wrong with a good recipe book for moms who love cooking. A new cookbook from your mom’s favorite author should work well. If not, perhaps look for something in a similar style.
There are plenty of other amazing gifts for seniors who love cooking too, like new spices, a hand pulled noodle kit, or a new kitchen tool (like a dehydrator or an Instant Pot).
Just remember to match the gift to your mother’s current abilities. This is important, as some seniors find that some of their skills decrease over time.
DIY Kits
Rather than buying an object for your mom, why not look for an activity instead?
There are plenty of options out there, including kits for candles, soaps, scrapbooks, painting, calligraphy, and more. Such kits can even turn into a family activity. Perhaps your mom could use one with her grandkids? Create a fun family activity out of it.
An Impressive Gift Basket
Gift baskets are the ultimate cheat solution for any difficult-to-buy-for parents. After all, a gift basket means they’re not getting a single gift, but at least half a dozen small ones instead.
There are a few tricks to making a stand out gift basket:
- Have a theme. A theme stops your basket from looking like a random mishmash of objects. Flowers and bright colors are a common Mother’s Day theme, but you can try something else. Why not pick a theme that really speaks to your mother?
- Coordinate colors. Try choosing a few colors that work well with each other. Doing so makes the whole gift look better and more cohesive. You can even re-wrap some items to make them fit the theme.
- Choose a variety of shapes and sizes. When you’re choosing gifts, pay attention to their shape and size. If everything is pretty similar, the basket won’t look exciting at all. You might even add some items just to make the basket pop – like a frypan in a cooking-themed basket.
- Focus on the unusual. Too many gift baskets are packed with easy-to-find goods, including those from Walmart. A gift basket isn’t appealing at all if your mom could easily buy the same items yourself.
- Don’t forget quality. The quality of the items in your basket matters as well. After all, cheap gifts aren’t all that exciting, even if there are a lot of them.
- Choose a good-looking basket of the right size. The basket (or box or crate) makes a difference. It’s best to find something that looks good in its own right, perhaps something your mom could reuse. Also make sure that the basket is a good fit for the gifts. If it’s too big or too small, the final gift won’t look great.
Also, be careful about monogramming gifts (like wine glasses). While doing so makes the basket seem less generic, the monogramming limits the reusability of the gifts. Your mom can’t easily return or pass on anything she doesn’t want.
Besides, monogrammed gifts often don’t look that good at all. There are other ways to make a gift look more personal.
Meet A Need
Finally, why not make your gifts match a specific need?
For example, if your mother is often stressed or perhaps depressed, a weighted blanket might be the perfect gift. If she suffers from muscle pain, perhaps a heated shawl?
The trick here is to look for solutions that are a little outside the box and are appealing. After all, buying your mom a hot water bottle or slippers because she’s cold isn’t that exciting.
Inexpensive Mother’s Day Gifts
The gifts we’ve featured so far all have one thing in common – they cost. So, what do you do if finances are tight?
Homemade gifts are normally the answer here. These don’t need to be boring. In fact, many parents prefer homemade gifts over ones bought from the store. After all, anything homemade takes more thought and more time than something you simply picked up on your way home.
Here are some ideas for interesting homemade gifts. They do require some materials, but you may have many of these on hand already.
Cook a Dinner
Food is much more than what we need for our survival. It also provides a source of social connection and often makes us feel much better.
So, why not cook a special meal for your mom? This might be a special meal just for her or something for the whole family, giving her the chance to connect with her grandchildren and perhaps her extended family all at once.
Focusing on your mom’s favorite food is a great approach, but this isn’t the only option. You could look for a new recipe, perhaps something that’s similar to one of her favorites, just a touch more exciting.
A Scrapbook or Photo Album
This gift can be as simple or as complicated as you like. The idea is to create something that highlights family memories.
For example, I sometimes create books that have a photo on one page and text on the page facing it. The text is a chance to talk about the moment the photo was taken, the emotions it stirs, or something else entirely.
You could also take a more traditional scrapbooking approach, by cutting out images and photos, using embellishments, or whatever you like. The sky is the limit here. Whatever approach you take, you end up with a memory-focused gift, which is often amazing for aging parents.
Homemade Treats
Okay, this one might seem a bit boring and predictable, but homemade treats like cookies, fudge, and the like always go over well.
However, it’s important to make sure that whatever you make matches your mom’s needs. For example, if she’s trying to lose weight or is a diabetic, then sugary fudge isn’t the best choice.
Bath and Skincare Products
Items like bath bombs, bath salts, and lotion get a little boring, but what if you make them yourself? Homemade versions are much more interesting. They also show that you’ve put a lot of thought into the gift.
You don’t need to spend too much money to make such gifts. Why not spend some time online and look up relatively inexpensive recipes?
Some Writing
Something that comes from the heart, like a poem, a short story, a letter, or even a song can be incredibly touching. This is also one of the cheapest types of gifts, as you have few materials to worry about.
But, don’t think the low price makes this gift useless. Something written from the heart for someone else is often much more touching than an expensive and complicated gift.
