Seated Exercises for Seniors That Keep You Healthy And Fit

March 12, 2017 By Angelica Herrera Venson, DrPH, MPH Leave a Comment

Seated exercises for seniors

Staying fit is a challenge at any age, but it becomes increasingly more difficult as people age. One of the key reasons is that physical strength decreases.

Likewise, seniors will often suffer from one or more chronic diseases. These can mean that exercise is difficult may also make it painful to complete.

There are many specific approaches that seniors can take to keep fit. You can learn more about these here. However, the purpose of this post is to focus on just one area – which is seated exercises for seniors.

The idea here is simple.

There are many cases where seniors cannot easily get up and move around. Indeed, for some people, trying to do standing exercises could be dangerous.

Seated exercises help seniors to stay active and strengthen their muscles, without having to get up. Thankfully, there is no shortage of different exercises that can be done while seated. For that matter, there are even some DVDs and in-person programs that specifically offer seated exercises.

For example, the video below is a 10 minute chair workout available on YouTube. You can also simply search “seated exercises for seniors” or something similar on YouTube to find a range of exercise videos.

Now, as you can probably imagine, some options may be more relevant for your specific situation than others.

In particular, some seniors may only be able to do a few exercises at a time, while others could easily follow a 20 minute video. The trick is to figure out which suits the senior’s level of skill and which they are likely to enjoy.

You may also find it beneficial to do the exercises with them.

Doing so might not help you directly. However, it can make the process seem less stressful and more enjoyable to the senior.
