Why Do Seniors Use TikTok?

These 20 TikTok celebrities aren’t the only seniors to use the platform. There are many more out there, all with their own distinct styles and histories to share.

That’s not even counting all of the other social media platforms you find seniors on, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. So, what’s the attraction?

Something to Focus on

Research suggests a significant association between having a sense of purpose and positive health outcomes. You may have noticed something similar yourself – it’s much easier to thrive when you feel like you’re working towards something.

This is an area that seniors sometimes struggle with.

After all, it’s easy to have parts of your purpose and identity strongly linked to your job or raising kids. When people near retirement age, they need to look for different meaningful activities and things to focus on.

Maintaining a TikTok channel can be surprisingly meaningful. Some of these seniors we’ve highlighted use their channel to impart wisdom. Others focus on humor instead, giving them the chance to lighten the moods of viewers throughout the world.

The channel is also a way to be seen, heard, and to leave a legacy. This could be incredibly important for seniors.

A Sense of Connection

It’s easy to say that digital connections are less powerful than in-person ones. That’s even true in some ways, but doesn’t take away from the power of connecting online.

Some of the TikTok stars on this list engage with their audience regularly, which could easily help with their mental health.

Plus, seniors with limited technological skills may partner with children or grandchildren to get their videos online. This is the case with multiple channels on this list. Other times, a husband and wife may work together.

Such collaborations are powerful for building connections between generations.

It’s Fun

Beyond all of these benefits, many of the TikTokers on this list simply seem to be having fun. They’re goofing around to the camera, dancing, cracking jokes, and the like.

What better way to keep yourself enjoying life than an audience for all your antics?
